Mix Series Vol 5: Dubbel Dutch

DOWNLOAD

Dubbel Dutch makes just the kind of mess we like over here. Big weird track lists that we can't file under anything. Austin to Africa and everything in the middle, the familiar becoming unfamiliar. Crafted with the touch of tone control records by someone who cares, thinking about composition as much as blurring the lines of House music. I think dancing too. A soundtrack for invisible cities, I'm definitely going to be using this one for headphones and train rides.

Mix Series Vol 4: DJ Jean Shorts - It's In Your Blood

DOWNLOAD

Halloween was crazy. I'm still recovering in fact. Lots of Disco, not lots of space on the dance floor. Said party was put together by my good buddy Ben Marcus, aka DJ Jean Shorts. He's known for providing patrons with heat suitable for doing rails in the Delorean. Inspired by this picture we found of Snow White doin' Snow White, It's In Your Blood is about the reaction to rhythm. Dance music is human nature as he says, and this one isn't so much for the bedroom. It's for ass shaking, riding into the club on a white horse, and well if your into that kind of thing, cocaine. Whatever might be in your blood.

Mix Series Vol 3: KOFFI GNATO

DOWNLOAD

Summer is almost over and we are all sad. Won't be long before Lake Michigan is frozen and the elote man's hustle is put on hold. I will start listening to nothing but mopey music and slip on the ice and drop my 40. Koffi Gnato out of Lyons, France isn't too excited about the change in seasons ether, and was nice enough to set Fall off for us with some Congolese Rhumba and Spanish African joints. A different situation than the past volumes, nothing but two turntables and a stack of *gasp* records spun together in a web of squealing guitars, tied off at the end with some of that bass stuff. Let this one seep out of your house to the back porch or stoop and enjoy some palm wine.

It's After the End of the World Mix Series Vol 2: LAMIN FOFANA - FATMATA WAS HERE

DOWNLOAD

Back with another mix to add to the seemingly sluggish collection! I know, things have been a bit slow but that Taliesin mix did a lot of damage. The recovery process has been a long, drawn out one and this episode is just going to screw things up again. I guess the idea to start my own series came about after a few beers and about a million podcasts that I realized took up a great deal of my listening, especially when out and about. Sure, I'm a fan of walks sans headphones especially when you live in a neighborhood where Cumbia is played everywhere, but the EL train's metal-on-metal screech isn't usually so enjoyable. Influenced by wonderful volumes such as Blogariddims, Mad Decent Radio, and Mudd Up!, I felt the need to start my own and provide an outlet for DJs out there to "release" their concoctions in a free online form.

For vol 2 we have Lamin Fofana out of Brooklyn with a very sinister transmission for us all. A very intimate selection of tracks that float down a river of broken bass and eerie late night interference. As much at home in a damp basement party as your house at 3am. This is important to me, as it can be hard to cut up a rug in your bedroom even in Chicago where we have a little more space in our apartments. Big shout outs to Lamin for passing this my way, and be sure to check him out at NEW YORK TROPICAL 9 this Friday if your lucky enough to be in NYC.

It's After the End of the World Mix Series Vol 1: TALIESIN - BATTURE MIX

DOWNLOAD

I am proud to present the first in a series of mixes featured on this site created by some of my favorite DJs and musicians working today. This will be an ongoing collection and when I figure it out, a podcast too. There is no real focus or theme to the overall outlook, aside from taking a look at the format of the mix and it's purpose.

For the first episode, we have Taliesin of the NYC Dutty Artz crew doing it real weird. A slow moving collage of tracks on a comedown tip. The youngin has always been a favorite around these parts and he was nice enough to set things off for us all. Much love to the man for his contribution.

The Batture Mix....
the batture is the space between the levee and Mississippi in New Orleans- or at least, that's what it means to me. I used to go down there when I was little and my mom was still in school. She'd bring me down for these great big bonfire parties- on that side of the levee you could just do whatever you want.

As far as I know, if you lived there, you didnt have to pay any property taxes- of course, if the river rose up- which is does often, your pretty fucked. People have all sorts of solutions- and some of the houses down there have an architecture that explicitly addresses the potential of water rising. I've always been in love with that space- it felt forbidden and full of the type of freedom I associate with New Orleans and growing up for a bit there. I used to be pretty embarassed about my family being from the south- white people in the North sure like to point fingers when it comes to making themselves feel liberal and good. As Ive gotten older I've become more proud and aware about my heritage.

This mix- Batture Mix- is a step back from alot of the things I've been releasing the last few years- it's a bit of an after party thing- or a kicking it at home thing- I think it's goofy that some many people just put out banger mixes- as though they arnt just alone in their bedrooms while they do it. So rough and tumble here it is... rest be assured you come see me at a gig and I'll work you out- but until then- enjoy something a bit less agresive- put on some head phones and enjoy.
