I Was In The Hood While You Were Shopping At Whole Foods

A snippet from Lil B's 6 Kiss mixtape (which has a creepy Trevor Brown-looking cover). Lil B raps over a really high pitched sine wave that sounds like something Fennesz made. I don't know how "enjoyable" it really is, but it's good backing proof to Lil B's position as poster-child for the effect the internet has had on the musical youth.

Based Juke

Lil B - So Much Pussy
Lil B - Drop That Azz
Lil B - Like Me
Lil B - Yea

Via Cocaine Blunts

B dives deeper into Chicago territory with four more outsider Footwork tracks normally only found on Youtube. Most of them are actually pretty good too. If he and DJ Nate made an album I would hope it would be titled The Divine Styler Swagtard.

Swagger Like a White Boy

GM Boyz - Jerkin & Twerkin 2009

This is my shit right here. West Coast party Rap in skinny jeans. I guess it already is West Coast party music, but you know what I mean. I swear this won't become a Jerkin blog, I've just been spending a lot of time grabbing stuff off digitaldripped.

Juketard

Lil B - Alright Daddy 2009

With plenty of Lil B talk going on I never saw this track talked about, a good thing for me because it fits perfectly on this website. There was a little Based God party going on at my house last night, which consisted of me and my fellow swagtards sporting smoking jackets and pipes while listening to audiophile Youtube quality music through my hundred thousand dollar stereo. He takes on the form of God, the Devil, Phil Collins, and in this interesting case, DJ Nate-era internet Footwork. It's all logical based on the fact that all of Lil B's music is brought to us through Youtube, as is all the high school Juke. Not at all the first shred of Ghetto House influence to embrace the Bay kids, but I'm definitely more interested in this case of warbling pitch than the Pack's Frank Ski nod.

Making a Young Mess

Messy Marv - Ask Yourself (from Prices on My Head, Thug Money on your Family vol 2 2009)

Some awesome Welsh dude took the time to create an archive of important events throughout history in which Messy Marv was present. The "Any Picture Can Be Improved by Adding Messy Marv to it" project depicts Young Mess at high school dances, in a tsunami, and destroying the Death Star with his eyes. He has witnessed the fall of Saddam, Bobby Kennedy's assassination, and the Hindenburg incident. Who would have thought?

Like the Sea, BASED

There are very few rappers I support that wear girl pants, but I find myself pretty perplexed by Lil B and his weird internet shenanigans. His 150+ Myspace pages with music about being both God and the Devil, and a blog about Nikola Tesla, slap beats and animal cruelty, this kid is out there. Sometimes he throws up some classic Bay Area joints, and he is quite fascinated by the instant thought powers of Twitter. He has received more pictures of girls in their underwear sporting his name in marker on their asses than any other rapper, but he'd rather get with Oprah. A strong interest in politics, aliens, and ecstasy is what drives this basket case to produce cosmic rant tracks distant from the teenage Hyphy school of Rap music.

Good Press Lately

Few articles I've enjoyed in the past week...

XLR8R ran an article in the latest issue on ZZK records in which they are taken on a journey by everyones favorite Avant-Cumbia hooligans to the crews favorite haunts in Buenos Aires. Really makes me ask myself, what the fuck am I doing in this frozen shithole known as Chicago?

Said Magazine also ran an article I missed back in April on everyone's favorite Midwestern goth kids "Yes We Really Do Smoke Crack" Salem. Highlights from the article/interview:

*John: In a lot of white trash towns where we’re from kids are into that for some reason. They like to torture animals and cut themselves and bleed into cups and worship the devil. That’s everywhere. In small meth towns that’s really big. The Midwest has that on lock.

*“There is this song called ‘Haffa’ that I made when I was really, really high on OxyContin,” says 20-year-old Jack Donoghue, the main beat-maker of the triad. “I don’t think I would have been able to make it sound like that if I wasn’t.”

*Donoghue tells me straight-up that the last band fight was about member John Holland smoking crack in the bedroom (he’s supposed to hit the pipe and blow out the bathroom window), and all agree that the only drug they don’t really like is weed.

The New Fader is also full of some good stuff, Including Rupture's article on Dominican Mambo star Omega and Cheif Boima's article on "proto-Jerk" youngin's D-Lo and Sleepy D.

The Pack Samples Frank Ski

Sorta late to the table on this one but still kind of exciting that the Hyphy crowd has a retro Ghetto House appreciation

Drug Abuse Loot

E 40 - On Oil Turned Up 2009

Droop E brings everyone up to speed with another rap meets rave on planet Pluto spaceship slap beat. Father E 40 seems busy ("Man I ain't had time to eat a sunflower seed") but came through with some pretty seasoned raps too. He also name drops my hometown Portland at the end, I guess Cool Nutz is in the new issue of the Source afterall. That subtle electric cello sounding thing is all out of tune and off key like it's from Droop's middle school band days prior to taking up the MPC and collecting Star Trek toys. Left field Hyphy at it's finest.

Thanks to the great Nation of Thizzlam for putting me up on this one. That is totally one of the best blog names in existence.

$100,000 Bed Sets

Messy Marv - The Shootin' Range (from Best of the Bay 2008)

While brazenness is obviously a large factor in Bay Area Hip-Hop (and well Rap music in general), your boy Young Mess is the king of leisure raps. In a Super Nintendos and Sega Genesises vein, he likes to speak his mind about what he does in his free time. Marv starts things off with a glass of orange juice and a blunt for breakfast, and ends his day fucking bitches on his 100,000 dollar bed set. Definitely my favorite Filmore native at the moment, be sure to check out "Prices on my Head, Thug Money on your Family" when it drops in about a week

A Sleepy Fucking D Sleepover

Sleepy D - "Sleepy Fucking D" (from The Best of The Bay 2008 Mixtape 2008)

While Hurricane Chris talks about going to clubs hes not even old enough to get into, 17 year old east Oaklander Sleepy D aspires to turn 18 so he can soon drop hammers at the juice bars. The beat on this one is Yay Area minimalism, but not so dependent on the bass bombs. Pretty strange bucket sounding drums with some scattered sinewaves. Been pretty impressed by bay production recently, especially by The Click in a spaceship sounding "I can Sell That" on 40 Waters new one. The Messy Marv tracks on this Best of The Bay mixtape are not to be slept on, and I would have put them up but couldn't resist posting this picture I stole from Sleepy's myspace page.
